The start of the groom’s cake tradition is not
positively known. It is believed that it likely
began with the thoughts of a family deciding
that it would be nice to do a cake more liked by
the groom. Interesting, also, small pieces of
the groom’s cake were wrapped and sent home with
unmarried female guests. If a maiden tucked the
cake under her pillow, her dreams would reveal
the man she was to marry. If you'd like to
revive this tradition, send pieces of the
groom’s cake home with guests in small gift
boxes, and attach a note describing this story.
A smaller version of the wedding cake done with
chocolate cake and chocolate icing was said to
be the earlier tradition. Currently, the bride
often orders the cake with the groom’s favorite
flavor, filling, and frosting, and keeps it a
secret from the groom. The cake becomes a gift
to the groom, and it often reflects the groom's
interests. A sentimental message added is a
heartfelt wedding present, and the cake is a
welcome presentation to your guests as well.
Many prefer to have the groom’s cake at the
reception, usually on a small table near the
wedding cake. You don’t want it to detract from
the beauty of the wedding cake, so don’t put it
on the same table. You may want to consider
serving it at the rehearsal dinner.
Some fun ideas for groom’s cakes: favorite
sport/team, musical instrument, outdoors theme
of hunting, fishing, etc., profession, favorite
food, or a tux-shaped cake. The purpose of the
groom’s cake is to honor the groom in a special
way, so ask your cake specialist for some help
in creating this memorable treat!
